The initiative, which came into effect on March 1, stems from the animal welfare agreement "Together for Animals" and is one of several initiatives intended to improve animal welfare for pigs.
Requirements to use sprinkler systems with appropriate duration and frequency have gone into effect as well as the requirement for local anesthesia prior to castration of male pigs.
At the beginning of the year, a tax scheme came into effect to ensure fewer docked tails in pigs. More targeted animal welfare controls have been introduced in pig herds.
